A DAY OF OUTDOOR FUN
The Greene County Fish and Game hosted a very successful outdoor conservation field days event on June 25th, better known as "JAKES DAY." Jakes Day is a program to teach youth outdoor skills. The National Wild Turkey Federation started the Porter Wagoner/Jakes Conservation Field Days Event to benefit all children through the age of 17. A parent or guardian must spend the day with the child. A lunch is provided participants.
Clubs across the nation, such as our local Greene County Fish and Game Assn., host these yearly programs. Guidance, grants, and all paper forms are available from NWTF. State Departments of Natural Resources are usually involved in the event. Our ODNR's Department of Wildlife provided some much needed equipment and personel to put on the event. Greene County Fish and Game also provided equipment including, bows, firearms and ammo. This year's event had six stations. For the first time youth got to shoot cowboy type .22 rifles and pistols on our new Cowboy Action Range. Trap shooting was another favorite station. Air Rifles shot at close range paper targets excited many of the youth. Our 25 yard rifle range had both the regular .22 rifle shooting, and another favorite, muzzle loader shooting. An Archery station finished out the events of the day. Club members manned most of the stations, and gave instruction where needed. Many of the 43 participating youth experianced these outdoor skills for the first time. Everyone enjoyed the day. Children and parents left with smiles on their faces. |
